Alternative Investments - Ethical options reviewed 23-09-2008
The old maxim of not putting your eggs in one basket is one of the founding pillars of investment theory. Yet, early 2008 proved that sometimes you know several baskets, with equities, corporate bonds and property having fallen in tandem. This poses significant challenges for ethical funds which are very largely focussed on the former two asset classes, yet alternatives are emerging in the form of environmental hedge funds, sustainable forestry funds, sustainable private equity and the rapidly growing field of micro-finance. We consider the opportunities for ethical investors and the rationale for including such investments to reduce portfolio risk as well as increasing the social and environmental impact of the underlying investments.
